The Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud Sujon has said that the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim or even the captain of the side, Shakib Al Hasan, can open the innings in the Asia Cup 2022 in case of emergencies.
The Asia Cup 2022, which is the 15th edition of the tournament, is scheduled to be played from August 27 to September 11. The entire tournament is set to be held in United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Bangladesh named their squad for the marquee tournament after multiple delays and only two specialist openers – Anamul Haque Bijoy and Parvez Hossain Emon – were picked in the 17-member squad.
Meanwhile, Mahmud said that along with specialist openers Anamul Haque Bijoy and Parvez Hossain Emon, veterans Shakib and Mushfiqur, Mehedi Hasan Miraz and Sheikh Mahedi can open the innings for the side and they will take the decision on the opening combination keeping in mind the bowling attack of the opposition.
“We have two specialist openers in [Anamul Haque] Bijoy and [Parvez Hossain] Emon. However, apart from these two, there are quite a few players who have got the experience to open the innings in domestic cricket.
“Keeping in mind Afghanistan’s bowling attack, we need to fix who will open the innings for us,” Mahmud told the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur today, as quoted by The Daily Star.
“It can be Mushfiqur Rahim. Or, you never know, even Shakib can open the innings. Mehedi Hasan Miraz, and Sheikh Mahedi can also open the innings. We have got a lot of options but we need to think about the team combination,” Mahmud added.

Mahmud further said that they might also make changes to the opening combination taking the conditions into consideration.
“None of our openers are unable to perform and we need to keep that in mind and in some cases, we need to change the positions. We might change the combination considering the pitch and conditions. But at the moment, I am not willing to disclose the names,” he said.
