The US House is set to vote on a bill today that would force TikTok’s Chinese parent company to divest from the video-sharing app within 165 days or face a total ban in the country, where TikTok has 170 million users. The bill needs a two-thirds majority to pass. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew has reportedly been holding urgent meetings with American lawmakers this week as part of the company’s lobbying effort, coupled with the short video app urging users to call their representatives to stop what it has termed a “TikTok shutdown”.
