A 35-year-old man in Bhopal was detained for vandalising a bust of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, officials said on Saturday.
The accused placed shoes on both shoulders of the bust at the Kushabhau Thackeray Convention Centre in Bhopal, a prominent location in the city that is also close to Raj Bhavan and the Police Control Room.
The incident led to outrage among Congress workers, who protested near the statue and later cleansed it with milk. They also filed a complaint regarding the incident.
“Based on the complaint of Jahangirabad Congress block committee president Yashwant Yadav, we registered a case under Section 298 (defilement of a sacred object) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A 35-year-old man has been detained,” said Police Inspector Manoj Patwa.
According to the police, the man informed the officials that he was intoxicated when he committed the act.
