AGARTALA: Home minister Amit Shah on Saturday said PM Narendra Modi’s vision and sensitivity for the development of the northeast, particularly the unprecedented expansion of its infrastructure over the past 10 years, has worked to not only cut physical distance but also bridged the distance of hearts between the people of the region and Delhi.
Addressing the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) here, Shah, who is the council’s chairman, highlighted how the region has witnessed a turnaround in terms of security, with violence witnessing a 71% decline in the last 10 years, and the building of foundational structures to move forward on the path of development. He said the Modi govt’s goal is to bring the region on par with the rest of India by accelerating its development pace.
“By 2047, when India becomes fully developed, the northeast will be the country’s most prosperous region,” Shah told the gathering that included Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and governors, CMs and ministers of Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim. Shah said Modi govt has accomplished the key task of establishing peace in NE. In the past 10 years, several peace treaties have been signed, and over 10,000 armed youths have joined the mainstream.
Stating that it is now time to give a big push to the country’s efforts to become a $5 trillion economy through NE’s development, Shah said the ministries of DoNER and the NEC are working to implement the mantra of “Act East, Act Fast, and Act First” to achieve this. With preparations underway to fully implement the new criminal laws across NE, Shah said police should now focus on ensuring that every citizen is granted their constitutional rights to property, honour and family protection.
