Residents demand removal of the dump near the Sembakkam lake

An impediment: The weigh station which was built near the Sembakkam Lake. But the work has been halted.

The Tambaram Corporation is building a weigh station near the Sembakkam Lake in the Hasthinapuram limits. It is coming up close to the rainwater drainage canal of the lake behind Thiru Vi Ka Nagar. Dumping of garbage in the lake is another issue and in a case filed by the Sarvamangala Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered that the garbage area be removed through biomining. However the verdict was not implemented by the Corporation. Again a case was filed and the NGT asked the Chief Secretary and the Chengalpattu Collector to submit a report by 2022 detailing the action taken. In November last year, the Water Resources and Revenue Departments served notice on the encroachers, but no action was taken to remove the dump. It is a pity that the Corporation is dumping garbage and constructing a waste segregation centre near the lake.

M. Ravi, Sarvamangala Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, Chitlapakkam.

Official responds:

A senior official of the Corporation says the construction of the weigh station has been halted. As there is no vacant land available for creating a dump in the Chitlapakkam zone, the dump has not been removed. A vacant land has been identified near Sarvamangala Nagar, and the dump will be shifted there.

Open pillar boxes

Two electrical feeder pillars remain open without doors at Kaviarasu Kannadasan Nagar. They are on the 4th Street and in the 7th Block. The feeder pillar in the 7th Block should be repaired immediately as a private school is located nearby. Complaints have been sent to Tangedco, but no action has been taken.

S. Mahendran, KKD Nagar.
