(ECNS) — No. 2 unit of Maerdang Hydropower Station, China’s highest-altitude facility of its kind on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, is set to complete trial operation on Monday in Maqen County, Guoluo Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province on Monday, according to China Energy Investment Corp.

All five turbine generator units at the station — four 550,000-kilowattunits and one 120,000-kilowatt unit– are scheduled to enter full operation on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2024.

Situated at an altitude of 3,300 meters, Maerdang Hydropower Station has a total installed capacity of 2.32 million kilowatts, with a750-kV ultra-high voltage substation, making it the largest hydropower station in the Yellow River basin.

Once fully operational, the station will generate more than 7.304 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 8.16 million tons, and sulfur dioxide emissions by 30,400 tons. It would meet the electricity demand of 1.825 million households with an annual electricity consumption of 4,000 degrees and cut 2.56 million metric tons of standard coal consumption every year.
