Leaders across the political spectrum paid rich tributes to singer P. Jayachandran, who bewitched generations of listeners with enduring romantic numbers, gentle light music and devotional music.
Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar said: ”Heartfelt condolences on the sad passing of Sri P. Jayachandran, noted singer. His endearing voice that charmed audiences for six decades will go on to soothe people’s hearts. May his soul attain Mukti,” he said.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan led the State in mourning. In a condolence message, Mr. Vijayan said that Mr. Jayachandran’s renderings transcended the bounds of time and remained etched in the collective memory of generations.
Mr. Vijayan said Mr. Jayachandran carved out a niche for himself in the music world throughout a career that spanned six decades. He noted that Mr. Jayachandran showcased the Malayalam language’s magical beauty through his renderings.
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan said Mr. Jayachandran’s melodious voice radiated fluidly over varied octaves and effortlessly explored the nuances of complex ragas.
Congress Working Committee member Ramesh Chennithala said Mr. Jayachandran’s love ballads mesmerised generations.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary M.V. Govindan said Mr. Jayachandran imbued his songs with emotions of love, loss and pining. He acquired an iconic status in the world of South Indian music.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State president K. Surendran said few singers could match Mr. Jayachandran’s range and ability. He said the popular crooner’s renderings packed concert halls and stadiums, and generations hummed the tunes to themselves.
