Kishan Reddy pays tribute to Karpoori Thakur

Hyderabad: Union minister G. Kishan Reddy paid tribute to Bihar former chief minister, the late Karpoori Thakur, on his birth anniversary at the BJP state office in Nampally on Friday. After paying his respects, the minister released the BJP diary.

Speaking to media persons, Kishan Reddy said Thakur, conferred the Bharat Ratna last year, had participated in the Quit India movement and was jailed for 25 months during British rule. Thakur worked as a teacher at a school located in his native place in Bihar after Independence.
“Karpoori Thakur played a key role in expanding the Hindi language. In 1956, he was elected as MLA in Bihar. He worked in the Praja Socialist Party and Samyukta Socialist Party. When Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister, Thakur initiated the people’s revolution against the then government policies,” Kishan Reddy explained. He recalled that the socialist party led by Thakur merged with Janata Party and the decision was taken when Thakur was in jail during the Emergency. Thakur played a key role in bringing a silent revolution against Indira Gandhi while still in jail.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Bharat Ratna for Thakur for his meritorious service to the nation. The NDA-led BJP government honours the service-oriented leaders and people by conferring them with prestigious awards,” Kishan Reddy averred.

Later in the day, Kishan Reddy visited People’s Plaza and performed prayers as part of laying the groundwork for the Bharat Mata ki Maha Harathi ceremony, scheduled for January 26 at Necklace Road, as part of the Republic Day celebrations.

Reddy announced that the BJP would organise the event for eight consecutive years at People’s Plaza on Republic Day “to inculcate patriotism and nationalism among the people, particularly the youth.” He added that this year’s program would feature Hyderabad-based artists performing various patriotic cultural events.
