48th International Kolkata Book Fair kicks off with record stalls

The 48th International Kolkata Book Fair 2025 was inaugurated on Tuesday by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and German Ambassador Phillip Ackermann. This year’s event boasts a record 1,057 book stalls, the highest in its history, with Germany as the theme country.

The inauguration ceremony featured dignitaries, including Dr Marla Stuckenberg, Regional Director of the Goethe-Institut, South Asia, and renowned writer Abul Bashar, who was honoured with the Guild Lifetime Literary Award, accompanied by a cash prize of Rs 2,00,000.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Ackermann described the fair as a “mela of books,” drawing a parallel to the cultural significance of Kumbh Mela. He highlighted Germany’s literary contributions and encouraged visitors to explore the German Pavilion.

Chief Minister Banerjee pointed out the historical and cultural ties between Bengal and Germany, mentioning Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s connection to the European nation. She said, “Our culture celebrates unity in diversity. Our forefathers gave us this philosophy, and we honour it.”

The fair features participation from over 1,000 publishers, including little magazine groups, and showcases books from countries like the USA, UK, France, Russia, Nepal, Spain, Peru, Argentina, Guatemala, and Costa Rica, along with major national and multinational publishers.

Iconic gates have been set up at the fairgrounds, named after figures like Salil Chowdhury, Ritwik Ghatak, Goethe, and Jibanananda Das, along with prominent German authors such as Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz Kafka, and Thomas Mann.

For the first time, the book fair introduces mascots — ducks named Haso and Hasi — to engage visitors. The event will run until February 9.
