Designer Rohit Bal’s Rs 18 crore estate in dispute, friend seeks will recognition

A legal dispute erupted over the multi-crore estate of renowned fashion designer Rohit Bal, who died on November 1, 2024. His close friend Lalit Tehlan has filed a probate petition in the Delhi High Court, seeking legal recognition of Bal’s last will, dated October 30, 2023.

The petition, filed by advocate Jay K Bhardwaj, states that Bal’s estate includes high-value properties, business assets, and valuable personal belongings.

His key immovable asset is his residence in Defence Colony, New Delhi, which consists of the first and second floors along with roof rights. Bal also owned a majority stake in Rohit Bal Designs Private Ltd, with factories in Noida and Greater Noida. The total estimated value of the estate is Rs 18.06 crore, including luxury watches, sculptures, and artifacts.

Bal’s will reportedly bequeath his entire estate to Tehlan, while granting Rs 10 lakh each to three longtime staff members, including two cooks and a driver.

However, Bal’s stepbrothers, Rakesh Bal and Rajiv Bal, have challenged the will’s validity. The petition alleges that Tehlan was prevented from accessing Bal’s residence after his death, with the stepbrothers allegedly changing the locks and deploying security guards at the property.

Citing concerns over possible misappropriation of assets, Tehlan has requested an ex-parte ad-interim injunction to prevent any sale or transfer of the estate. He has also filed for the appointment of an administrator pendente lite to safeguard the assets until the court determines the will’s validity.

On Wednesday, Justice Anish Dayal noted that Tehlan was not a family member and the will was unregistered. However, Tehlan’s counsel, Sanjiv Kakra, argued that Tehlan and Bal shared a close relationship for over 20 years.

The case is set for hearing on February 4, when the court may issue a notice to Rakesh and Rajiv Bal.
