‘Sorry For The Accident, But We Are Managing Very Well’: Hema Malini On Maha Kumbh Stampede

Veteran actress and politician Hema Malini participated in the Maha Kumbh on Monday evening, where she met Junapeethadhishwar Mahamandaleshwar Acharya Swami Avdheshanand Giri Ji Maharaj, also known as Pujya Prabhushri Ji, at the Prabhu Premi Sangh Kumbh Camp.

Hema Malini reacted to the stampede at the Maha Kumbh on Wednesday. She said, “There is a lot of crowd. I request that too many people should not come at once.”

She also expressed her grief and said, “It is very sad and we are sorry about it but we are managing everything very well.”

The BJP leader also expressed dismay over not being able to attend the Shahi Yatra that has been halted due to the stampede.

Earlier, Hema Malini expressed her gratitude after taking a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam on the sacred occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

“Iss shubh avsar par mujhe yahan snan karne ka mauka mila, yeh mera saubhagya hai. Bahut hi accha laga hai, itne karooron log aaye hue hain, yahan mujhe bhi sthan mila, nahane ka. Dhanyavad. (It is my good fortune. I feel very happy that, among the millions of people who have gathered here, I too got an opportunity to take a holy dip. Thank you.)”

However, concerns were raised on social media, with many suggesting that authorities should restrict celebrities and dignitaries from participating in the ritual until the crowd settled. The gathering witnessed a stampede-like situation due to the overwhelming number of pilgrims, leading to several casualties, as confirmed by officials.

In response to the chaos, the Akharas decided to cancel their traditional ‘Amrit Snan’ for Mauni Amavasya, though devotees continued taking dips at Sangam and other ghats within the Mela area. The Amrit Snan on Mauni Amavasya holds immense significance in the Maha Kumbh, attracting nearly 10 crore pilgrims. This year, the event was even more spiritually significant due to ‘Triveni Yog,’ a rare celestial occurrence happening after 144 years.

In the early hours of the morning, sirens from ambulances and police vehicles echoed through the Kumbh Mela, interrupting the chants of mantras and shlokas. The injured were quickly transported to the central hospital set up in the Mela area, as their worried relatives and senior officials gathered there.
