
Ottawa:
A number of Canadian provinces, together with Ontario and Quebec, banned the sale of US alcohol on Tuesday, a part of a broad nationwide retaliation in opposition to import tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.
“This is a gigantic hit to American producers,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated in saying the measures imposed by Canada’s largest province.
Shops run by the publicly managed Liquor Management Board of Ontario (LCBO) promote almost one billion Canadian {dollars} ($688 million) value of US alcohol merchandise annually, Ford stated.
The LCBO’s web site was down Tuesday, with a discover saying the shop was eradicating “US merchandise in response to US tariffs on Canadian items.”
In Quebec, the federal government stated it was ordering the provincial alcohol distributor “to cease supplying American alcoholic drinks” to shops, bars and eating places.
Manitoba’s Premier Wab Kinew posted: “We’re taking US alcohol off the cabinets.”
The provincial authorities in British Columbia stated its liquor distributor would “cease shopping for American liquor from ‘crimson states’,” those who voted for Trump’s Republican Get together.
