
SILCHAR: A protest in opposition to the Waqf Act turned violent in Silchar of Assam’s Cachar district Sunday after demonstrators hurled stones at police, which resorted to a cane cost to revive legislation and order.
Muslims from Berenga, Madhurband, and Kanakpur gathered at Badri Bridge within the morning to take out a protest rally to Madhurband. When the rally reached its vacation spot, a number of protesters sat on the highway in Chamragudam locality, resulting in an altercation with police. It was then that some protesters hurled stones at police.
DM Mridul Yadav issued prohibitory orders beneath Part 163 of BNSS throughout the district within the night.
Cachar SP Numal Mahatta mentioned, “With the mannequin code of conduct in place for the upcoming panchayat polls, a protest march was carried out with none permission. Whereas the rally was initially peaceable, a gaggle of protesters breached police barricades and superior in the direction of Silchar city, with some miscreants even throwing stones on the cops.” The responsible will face authorized repercussions, Mahatta added.
Azad Hossain Majumder, representing demonstrators, condemned the behaviour of some protesters and mentioned he helps police motion in opposition to the alleged perpetrators.
