Huge protest towards Waqf Act in Manipur, 1000’s take to streets

Huge protests erupted throughout Manipur’s Imphal East, Thoubal, and Bishnupur districts on Monday as a outstanding Muslim group organisation took to the streets in opposition to the Waqf Modification Act, 2025. 1000’s of demonstrators fashioned human chains and chanted slogans towards the controversial laws.

The largely peaceable protests have been led by Meitei Pangal residents from Muslim-majority areas in two key meeting constituencies, Imphal East and Thoubal.

Group leaders and demonstrators have strongly criticised the Act, alleging that it infringes upon their constitutional rights and undermines the possession and autonomy of Waqf properties.

“The Act violates the Structure of India. It assaults the rights of the Muslim minority. We is not going to settle for any try to grab our Waqf land,” mentioned protestor Moulvi Atuar Rahman. He emphasised that democratic protests will proceed till the Act is repealed”.

Echoing the sentiment, protester Md Raees Ahamad mentioned, “I’m completely sure that the honourable Supreme Courtroom will hear our plea. We, the Muslims, is not going to cease elevating our voices, not till our final breath.”

The protests started a day after the invoice was signed into legislation and have since gained momentum throughout a number of districts. Demonstrators stay steadfast, vowing to proceed the agitation in defence of their non secular and group rights.

Whereas the demonstrations have largely remained peaceable, one troubling incident has raised alarm. A home belonging to Asker Ali in Thoubal district was allegedly set on hearth after he voiced assist for the Waqf Modification Act on social media. The incident has sparked concern over rising intolerance throughout the group and the potential escalation of the protest motion.
