Myanmar’s junta ended its state of emergency on Thursday after 4½ years, ramping up plans for a December election that opposition teams pledged to boycott and displays stated will likely be used to consolidate the navy’s energy.
The navy declared a state of emergency in February 2021 because it deposed the civilian authorities of democratic chief Aung San Suu Kyi, sparking a multi-sided civil warfare that has claimed hundreds of lives.
The order gave junta chief Min Aung Hlaing supreme energy over the legislature, government and judiciary — however he has lately touted elections as an off-ramp to the battle.
