Low-Pressure: Heavy Rainfall for AP Predicted

Visakhapatnam: A low-pressure system would develop in the west-central Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours, following the formation of two surface circulations in the region. This would bring heavy rainfall to several areas in Andhra Pradesh.

The weather office said, “Embedded upper air cyclonic circulations, one located over the west central Bay of Bengal and another over southern coastal Myanmar have merged. This has resulted in a cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8km above mean sea level and tilting south-westward. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the west central Bay of Bengal and its surrounding areas by Monday night.”

IMD issued a five-day weather alert for north coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, south coastal AP and Rayalaseema. On day one, heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely in isolated areas of these regions. Surface winds may reach speeds of 30-40 km/h.

Similar conditions are likely on the second day. From the third to fifth day, isolated locations in NCAP, Yanam, SCAP and Rayalaseema may experience thunderstorms with lightning.

IMD said, “In conjunction with this developing system, the southwest monsoon has officially withdrawn from parts of West Rajasthan and Kachchh as of Sept 23, 2024, which is later than the typical withdrawal date of Sept17. This withdrawal meets specific criteria, including the establishment of an anti-cyclonic circulation over west Rajasthan and a lack of rainfall in the region for five consecutive days.
