A 50-year-old man was deported to Bangladesh on Saturday after he was arrested by the city police from south-east Delhi’s R.K. Puram for staying in the country “illegally”. This came a day after a 28-year-old woman was deported to the neighbouring country for being an “illegal immigrant”.

‘Repeat offender’

Feroz Mulla, a native of Madaripur in Bangladesh, had previously been deported in 2004, when he was found living illegally at Dholak Basti in Yamuna Pusta since 1990, DCP (South West) Surendra Choudhary said.

However, he re-entered India illegally through the Benapole-Petrapole border in 2022 and has been living in R.K. Puram ever since, the DCP added.

The officer said when the police apprehended the accused on Friday, he falsely claimed to be a resident of Bongaon in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district but on sustained interrogation, he admitted that his native place was in Madaripur in Bangladesh.

Mulla told the police that he worked in shops and dhabas in Delhi to sustain himself.

Following the orders of Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena, the Delhi police had launched a two-month drive on December 11 to identify “illegal Bangladeshi immigrants”. They have so far identified over 1,500 illegal immigrants, the police said.
